A DROP OF HISTORY. CULTURE.

AND COURAGE.

Brave pioneers and their noble beasts of burden have set the bar very high for us.

We honour them by offering you only the best of ourselves.

In March 1890, a group of citizens proposed to the acting President the creation of a

tax of five cents per Colon (national currency) per arroba of coffee exported to

finance the construction of the National Theatre.

And the historic odyssey began.

In the 19th century, coffee was transported in wooden carts pulled by oxen along

routes that could take weeks through valleys and mountains.

Seven years later, the idea and effort became true and the National Theatre held

its Grand Opening in San Jose in October 1897 with a lavish performance of the opera

Faust.
